IWUF Submits Wushu Application for Inclusion as Additional Event in Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games |
IWUF Submits Wushu Application for Inclusion as Additional Event in Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games On May 8 the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee opened the application process to IOC-recognized International Federations for additional events to be included at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games. Seizing this opportunity, the IWUF submitted its application on June 8 for wushu to be included in the Games on the Additional Event Programme. Twenty-six IOC-recognized IFs submitted applications. The Tokyo 2020 Additional Event Programme Panel will now examine each application and a shortlist will be announced on 22 June 2015. The second phase of the application process will then commence. Review of the applications will be based on the key principles that the additional event(s) will serve as a driving force to promote the Olympic Movement and its values, with a focus on youth appeal; and also that the additional event(s) will add value to the Games by engaging the Japanese population and new audiences worldwide, reflecting the Tokyo 2020 Games vision.
The Tokyo Organizing Committee states that the selection procedure will be open and fair. Phase II will include the submission of further details from the shortlisted Ifs and a presentation to the Additional Event Programme Panel will take place in Tokyo. The Additional Event Programme Panel will propose its recommendations to the Tokyo 2020 Organizing Committee, which will make a final decision on the successful event(s) to be proposed to the IOC. The final decision, in line with the Olympic Charter, will be made by the 129th IOC Session in Rio in August 2016.
